The Communities

Animated Picture of the State of MaineAugusta, Maine is the home of the Vickery, a one-stop service model of comprehensive services for children and families. In addition to the Children's museum, Kennebec Pediatrics, and the Family Room, the other tenants that call the Vickery home include: Child Development Services, Catholic Charities' Therapeutic Foster Care; and Families First. They addressed coordination of early intervention with the medical home and developed a guild book for communities to facilitate interagency efforts to improve services for young children and their families.

Animated Picture of the State of IdahoPocatello, Idaho - The Children's Special Health Program, (CSHP) Task Force has met since 1995 to discuss ways to improve services for children with special needs and their families. Members of the CSHP task force include the Part C early intervention program, local pediatricians, Idaho State University faculty, Head Start, Part B preschool program, parents, regional public health staff, and service providers from the private sector. The CSHP task force targeted the coordination of early intervention and the medical home concepts as the service integration as the focus of their activities.

Animated Picture of the State of Missouri Jefferson County, Missouri - The services and supports for young children are coordinated by Jefferson County Early Childhood Council (JCEEC). The community has pinpointed the development of common application/eligibility procedures as its focus. JCEEC conducted a survey with a small number of families to identify the barriers to accessing services. The council focused its efforts on ways to streamline the application process to obtain services from multiple agencies.

Animated Picture of the State of IdahoLewiston, Idaho has developed strong community collaboration via its large-scaled Valley Childhood Council which supports children of all ages in the region and through the Community Alliance for Young Children (CAYC) which supports young children with or at-risk of developing special needs. A mental health task force was formed as part of the ODRC effort with a focus on improving the community's ability to meet mental health needs of young children and their families. This council identified strategies to improve coordination among early intervention and mental health providers, such as coordinated financing to support interdisciplinary training and coordinated referrals and intervention plans.
